What You Should Know About Lift Chairs And How To Choose One For You

Lift chairs are chairs that help to gradually set a person down to a sitting position or lift the person to the standing position without causing any strain or injury. These chairs are a boon to the elderly and to those who are temporarily injured or permanently disabled.

How They Function

Power lift chairs are designed with a built in motor that helps change the position of the seat from upright to reclined to absolutely flat. Most lift chairs will plug directly into the wall socket. As an additional safety features, most chairs also have a backup power supply that is activated when there is a power outage. For people whose mobility is restricted and who would otherwise not be able to sit or stand without some assistance, the battery backup ensures that they will never be left stranded.

Types Of Lift Chairs With Regards To Reclining Positions

As far as the reclining positions are concerned, there are 4 models:

• A standard, one-position model is the most basic and most economical of all models. In this model the chair back remains upright and only the seat cushion is movable.
• In a 2-position variation, the chair back can be kept upright or it can be kept in a reclining position.
• A 3-position model goes one further and allows you to push the back down completely so it can be used for sleeping too.
• With the infinite position model you can adjust the chair back and the foot rest independently of each other, which means you have infinite choices as far as the positioning is concerned. This offers the ultimate in comfort and is an excellent choice for someone who will be spending a major portion of the day in their chair.

Other Factors To Consider

In addition to taking into consideration the reclining position of the chair, there are also a few other factors that you will need to think about when choosing a model that suits you best.

One of these is the amount of space that you have. If space constraints are a concern, you should consider a wall hugger model. Wall hugger models are designed so that they can be placed as little as six inches away from the wall while still being able to recline.

Another factor is your height and weight. If you are heavily built you should take a look at the bariatric models, which are more sturdily built and have more powerful motors that can handle the excess weight.

The key to the getting the most benefits from a lift chair is to make sure you choose the right one for you. So take your time, get advice from the professionals and read up on the different models available and their pros and cons before you pick one.

Foam Rolling Exercises: Getting Rid Of Your Fitness Fears

The foam roller usually stands a few feet long. It's slim, sleek, and is available in cute colours such as bright blue, stylish grey or elegant purple. When you touch it, it's soft and plush, although some models can be firmer or have more resistance than others. Standing beside other larger, more mechanical gym equipment such as the chest press or the running machine, the foam roller doesn't look impressive at all. But you'll most likely be proud of this innocent-looking gizmo once you learn more about its versatility and its multiple fitness benefits.

Today, more and more fitness trainers highly recommend the incorporation of foam rolling as an important component of a workout routine. While it's been previously thought of as a tool for athletes or serious body builders only, the foam roller is now starting to be a steady presence in the average fitness-conscious individual's exercise regimen. This is because its biggest benefits-core stability, pain management and injury prevention-are all relevant to everyone regardless of fitness level or goal.

Another reason for the increasing popularity of foam rollers is the practicality and value for money they offer. Fitness experts say that twenty minutes of foam rolling will provide you the same benefits if you go for a one-hour sports massage from a luxury spa. You'll feel de-stressed and relaxed; those knots and tensions will effectively be eased away with even a simple overall body foam rolling routine. If you know where to purchase, a high quality foam roller that you could use for a long time can be purchased for the price of a one-time massage session with a qualified therapist. People spending long hours at their desks or running errands all day or those with hectic schedules and a harried lifestyle will surely benefit from the relaxing and revitalising benefits of foam rolling.

Engaging in foam roller exercises allows you to enjoy the advantages of myofascial release, a type of soft tissue therapy designed to address pain, stiffness or soreness. As foam rolling has been proven to enhance core stability and core strength, it is now a recommended regimen for those experiencing knee injuries, lower back pain, hip pain and lower limb injuries. Studies have also shown that the body can heal faster and prevent further injuries or complications from injuries if you practice the right foam rolling routines as recommended by a fitness expert.

Whether you're a professional athlete, a serious fitness enthusiast, a weekend warrior or just someone looking for the most effective way to ease everyday stress and tension, consider using foam rollers. Find the right retailer for high quality and value for money foam rollers to add to your fitness arsenal today.

IPL Machines With FHR Technology

In January 2013 a new technology emerged in the field of IPL hair removal systems. Called FHR, meaning "Fast hair Removal" this new technology replaces E-Light with the newer F-Light. The main difference between these technologies is how the light photons are transmitted to the Chromophore.

Before we delve more deeply into this new technology, a brief history of IPL and how it has advanced. Most people know that IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL is exactly that, very intense white light. The required wavelengths of light for the desired treatment are filtered out, leaving you with the exact colour needed.

IPL is a very flexible platform as it replaces the need for multiple laser systems that do the same job. Lasers are focused beams of specific colour, IPL is the whole spectrum of light and you just select the one you want by use of filters.

E-light replaced IPL a few years ago as a more effective platform. E-Light combines light and RF, which is also part of the electromagnetic spectrum, to give a more focused and gentler treatment. IPL can be slightly painful on light skin, but on dark skin, some treatments are just not possible due to burning and pain. E-Light provided the means to treat darker skins without pain by intensifying the results on the Chromophore without intensifying the power of the light.

Suddenly, hair removal and other treatments became possible for even the darkest skins, opening up a whole new and eager marketplace for the Beauty industry.

Recently, SHR technology was introduced as a faster way of offering treatments, but SHR is not without it's own set of risks. SHR means "Super Hair Removal" and what it effectively does is pulse a number of times from 1 to 5 when you press the switch. The main issue with this is safety. It is easy to burn your client if you do not move the hand piece fast enough. It is also hard to judge where you have treated because of the swift movements, which also means you can miss areas. To use SHR, the therapist needs special training and anyone who disagrees with this si courting trouble and possible law suits.

Enter FSR, or F-light. F-light does the job of speeding up the process by focusing the RF photons in a more precise way than E-Light can. E-Light uses a scattergun approach, and it is effective, but F-Light has the precision of laser, meaning better efficacy, improved results and faster treatment times. All this adds up to a safer treatment regime and more profit for the clinic.

So, F-Light is slightly more gentle than E-Light, a lot safer and more effective than SHR and doesn't cost the premium that SHR seems to attract. SHR is most certainly a hot topic and being marketed hard, but F-Light is the safer, more effective way to go. There is also no need for specialist training on top of the normal IPL training needed for F-Light.

Create Your Best Possible New Year - Add This Essential Ingredient

New Year resolutions are all well and good, and no doubt you received lots of good wishes for bringing your New Years resolutions into being. But resolutions and wishes can only go so far; they're just not enough to make it all happen. Having your best New Year means engaging in an on-going process in which you create success.

But how do you go about it? In short, creating the success you crave is about engaging in the right activities to bring it about.

Well, you might say, I've already got a full plate; I don't need anything more on my to-do list. In fact, I'm trying to simplify my life, not complicate it with one more thing to do!

Well, yes, and that's the good news. Because paying attention to this one thing will help you do just that - simplify your life, reduce your stress and support you in keeping your New Year's resolutions.

So what is that one thing? It's this: start your successful New Year by paying attention to your inner life first, before you do even one thing about anything in your outer life. In other words, attend to your inner self - your subjective, emotional life, because that is the biggest future success factor.

You've no doubt heard that and read it time and again. It's a simple truth that the latest scientific research has proven over and over.

So, to restate: proceeding from the resolutions you've identified to the results you want means successfully managing your inner life process. Why? Because it's there you'll discover and address the road blocks, stumbling blocks, rip tides, back eddies and black holes that otherwise might blind side you despite even your firmest resolve.

To emphasize the point: to triumph in your outer life become aware of what your inner emotional needs and issues are. That way, you'll meet them head on and take care of them before they have a chance to manifest in your outer world.

That's the secret to creating your best possible new year: to begin with your inner life before you encounter any problems that might crop up during the year.

Then, whether your New Year's brings challeneges about keeping your resolutions, or a relationship gone dead, a knotty work problem, trouble with a teenager, a creative project stalled out, a health crisis, or grievous loss, you'll be prepared to not only progress but triumph!

This is so because your inner life affects every I life situation. That's why inner life is a primary focus of programs to help parents, or people in recovery, or job seekers, or those recovering from a divorce. That inner life process common to all of us is even where some childrens'music educators begin.

Indeed, your inner life applies to all your life circumstances and challenges - its fundamental to every human condition from gestation through your last breath!

So do employ it first in creating your best possible New Year.

Steps for Fall Prevention

Change in floor elevations can be unexpected and dangerous. Entry steps, stairs between floors, steps between rooms, steps into tubs and steps at showers are all potential risks. More people in the United States die from falling on stairs than in any other country. Fortunately, falling on stairs or tripping on steps are largely preventable. Proper stair design, focused attention, good housekeeping, and well-maintained health can all contribute to fall prevention.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Proper stair design is the leading factor in fall prevention. Handrails are provided on each side of a stairway, especially a winding stairway where rectangular and tapered treads require users to move from larger to smaller tread depths. Handrails run the complete length of the stairs with no interruption and extend beyond the top and bottom of the stairs by 12". A tactile indicator at the end of the handrail indicates when the end of the stairs is near. Contrasting handrails provide better visibility.

Stairs should be checked for non-uniform steps--repair risers to be the same height, treads to be the same depth.

Stair treads should be distinguishable from one another. Stair nosings may be painted or stained a different color from the treads (never taped) or have metal/resilient nosings installed to contrast with the tread floorcovering.

Treads may be covered with a non-patterned, low-pile carpet firmly affixed to the tread with no cushion underlayment.

3-way light switches are to be located at the top and bottom landings to ensure available lighting at all times. Glare-free motion sensors should be at all entry steps. All entry steps should be protected from inclement weather with overhangs or awnings.

One entry into your home can be a no-step entry minimizing the number of falls while carrying groceries or fumbling for keys. Shower thresholds can also have no-step entries removing tripping factors and barriers. Steps accessing whirlpools are dangerous and should be clad with small slip-resistant tile. Grab bars or handrails should be at all wet locations regardless of the number of steps.

If building a new home or addition, locate the master suite and laundry on the first floor minimizing the use of stairs. If your home has several stories, install a toilet on each floor or research the installation of an elevator.

BEHAVIORAL FACTORS

When using stairs, be focused and take your time. Use the handrails and encourage visitors to use the handrails. Avoid carrying items with both hands. Don't carry bulky objects that block your vision. Wear suitable footwear. Remove your reading glasses or adjust your bifocals. Don't talk on the phone or run down stairs to answer a doorbell. Install an intercom instead.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING

Keep stairways and landings free of all obstacles, spills and debris. Remove loose area rugs from top and bottom landings.

Glare on stairs can distort visual perception and result in momentary blindness. Reduce glare from stairwell windows with shades or sheers. Prevent glare on treads with matt finish cleaners. Keep stairwells evenly lit and burned bulbs replaced.

Stairwell photos and artwork displays are not a good idea. Attention brought to these items can result in loss of balance and falls.

HEALTH

Be aware of medications and their effect on your body. Eyesight, judgment and balance can be greatly compromised and falls may occur. Maintain an active lifestyle. Keep all eye prescriptions current.

SHOULD YOU STOP USING STAIRS?

Don't necessarily avoid stairs, but let your doctor advise you of any special health problems that might limit stair use. According to Health Canada's Stairway to Health Program, climbing stairs significantly contributes to the 30 minutes of physical activity you need every day and increases your leg power to help reduce falls.

4 Top Tips for Making Lifestyle Changes

The period of Lent begins today and, whether you're religious or not, it's a time when many people choose to give up something for the duration - 6 weeks. Someone sent me a note that prompted me to write this article:

'I'm not religious at all but as of tomorrow I'm giving up:

Chocolate

Caffeine

Bread

And...

Cake

Hope I can do it.'

My first thought was I wonder which will be the biggest challenge. Turned out it's going to be cake.

Whether it be prompted by Lent or not, for some people, the idea of giving up all of the above would be daunting. Others seem to take on such challenges with ease. We know because we've worked with many of them. So I thought it worth sharing some thoughts on what makes people successful with removing certain behaviours from their life, whatever time of year they decide to do so.

1. It helps to have an alternative or substitute for each of the items that you're trying to remove from your routine. Feeling as though you're missing out is a sure-fire way to send you running straight for whatever it is you're trying to avoid. For the example above, this person could snack on nuts instead of chocolate, drink herbal tea instead of coffee and they'll need to plan carefully what their lunch options are if they're trying to avoid bread. Salads will go so far but they'll also need some rice, pasta and potato options.

2. Be very clear about why you are making your chosen changes. Remind yourself regularly throughout the day of the good reasons for sticking with your choices. This is crucial. Without this context to change your behaviour, you'll quickly fall back into old routines.

3) Acknowledge your progress regularly and very quickly your chosen new behaviours will become as well practised and easy to follow as the habits you're replacing. Tick off each day you complete as you intended according to your new plan and after just a few days you'll never look back.

And one last thing. Those that succeed with lifestyle changes usually adopt the inner thoughts of, 'this is easy, I can do this, I want to make this work' rather than the thoughts which can limit success of others such as, 'this is so hard, I wish I hadn't started this, I'd kill for a coffee / chocolate bar / drink right now.'

Think seriously about what you want to changeand when the time is right, commit to it and never doubt your ability to succeed.

The 4 Grades of Microtia

Microtia is a congenital defect that occurs at birth and often affects only one ear. The name of this condition is derived from Latin language translating to "little ear." This condition manifests as an underdeveloped ear and occurs mainly in boys. This deformity can range from a slightly underdeveloped external ear to the outer structures being almost nonexistent. This birth defect happens once in 7,500 births within the United States. For some reason, ethnicity plays a part in the occurrence rate. African-Americans and Caucasians have fewer occurrences than Asians or Hispanics. The levels of severity are graded from Grade 1 to Grade 4 with the fourth being the most severe.

In Grade 1, there is the least amount of deformity. The ear is minimally smaller than usual and the canal is intact. With Grade 2, the canal is closed off and there may be some hearing problems. The external structures resemble a tiny ear and may have portions missing. In Grade 3, the canal and drum are missing. In this grade, the external structure is just a bump that's barely recognizable. In Grade 4, there is no external structure at all. This most severe form of microtia is also called anotia.

Luckily, there are treatment options for children suffering from microtia. An effective ear reconstruction technique involves using a rib graft and actual tissue. Although this takes some time because there will be a series of operations to complete the process, the resulting ear is natural looking. Because it's made from transplanted tissue from the child's body, it will grow and respond like a normal ear. Plastic prosthetic devices have to be refitted and may break or fall off during athletic activities. The reconstructed ears can even be pierced which is popular with girls and some boys, as well.

Surgery to correct microtia can ideally be carried out at age five or six years old. In early childhood, kids don't usually notice that they look any different than others. It's when they get to school that children start to be teased and their self-esteem can be affected. For this reason, it's recommended that the ear reconstruction procedures be performed as soon as the child weighs forty pounds and is ready to undergo surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon harvests the rib bone and begins the series of operations to create a new ear.

When children are born with microtia, it can be a traumatic experience for all concerned. Parents may feel guilty as if they caused it, especially if they have the genetic predisposition to do so. If there is a hearing loss, that will need to be addressed as well. Whether a child exhibits Grade 1, 2, 3, or 4, a skilled surgeon can repair the problem.

The Modern World Disease - Tiredness

Do you feel like you are always tired and functioning below par? Why do you think that is?

In order to understand the answer to those questions, we must first of all look at your lifestyle, (including work life, diet and fluid intake, recreational and exercise habits).

So let's start from the top. How do you start your day? Do you jump up, run around and rush to work or do you stretch gently on waking, getting out of bed to eat a proper, nutritious breakfast?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you skip it or eat insufficient protein your blood sugar will drop quickly and come 11 am or before you will maybe develop a headache, feel exhausted and you could be struggling to concentrate. This is the meal that helps stabilise your blood sugar throughout the whole day. Even if you go on to have a great lunch, you are unlikely to get away with skipping breakfast.

Eggs are good but go for at least two and make them large, fresh and free-range. If you breakfast early, (say 7.00 am - 7.30 am), try to make sure you have a snack come 10.30 am - 11 am to help you last to lunch. Fruit, yoghourt, nuts, seeds or humous with pitta are all good.

Try to avoid too many carbs at lunch, particularly bread. Bread for many people can trigger tiredness by raising blood sugar too quickly so that you get an insulin rush, leaving you feeling like a nap. Try spelt bread, based on the old Roman, unbleached flour recipe. Cheese and spelt crackers can also be good. You could also take a flask of home-made soup and a couple of spelt rolls in for your lunch.

Drink little and often to stay hydrated. Do not wait until you are thirsty or feeling "dry". Always have good quality drinking water with you and avoid sugary drinks.

If you can get out of work at lunchtime, go for a walk in a grassy or tree-lined area if possible to "discharge" environmental stressors from the office and perk yourself up for the afternoon.

When you get home, rehydrate and get changed quickly out of your work clothes to prevent your mind being permanently in"work mode" and unable to switch off at bedtime. Have an unwind routine, whether it's a bath or shower followed by exercise or listening to music. This is vital to "download" the events from the work day, leaving you free to have your own time.

Don't go to bed overtired, hungry or thirsty and make sure you have fresh air coming in to your room. Darken your room for better sleep.

How To Improve How You Look

There's a good list of things that someone can do to improve the way they look, and a huge variety of reasons why they might desire to do so. Occasionally we want to feel a little better about our appearance; a jot more bullish in the manner we move around and the poise with which we bear ourselves - perhaps you're planning to start looking for a new job and want to carry out the interviews a little more confidently. Sometimes we're more obsessed with how other people perceive us, so in the place of wanting to change our look for our own frame of mind, we're looking to influence the way that other people perceive us. Sometimes it's a mixture of all these reasons. But whatever the reason, today there are a great many things that you can do to alter your appearance for the better.

Getting thinner is a simple way to change or improve the way you look. It can make you feel better both physically and emotionally, as well as having a largely remarkable influence on the way others perceive you. You might also change your hair; as they usually have longer hair, ladies can alter their hair more dramatically, cutting a long style short or growing shorter hair long; cutting in a fringe or growing an old one out. There's hair color too of course - people of either sex can alter the shade of their hair by making use of either dye or bleach, or even both. Men can also create changes with their facial hair, acquiring sideburns, a moustache of one sort or another, bringing in some designer stubble or perhaps beginning to grow a full beard.

But one of the most surprisingly dramatic ways to alter the way you look, and one which many people who look at you might really struggle to put their finger on when they first see you, is by improving the way your teeth look. Going to see a dentist or an orthodontist and straightening your teeth can be a long and costly exercise, as can having veneers added to them. However there are more readily affordable and cheaper things you can do from the comfort of your own home that will nonetheless still have a terrific impact on the appearance of your teeth, and so also alter the overall look of your face.

There are a wide number of ways in which those who are potentially interested in doing so can whiten their teeth at home, without going to the expense and the hassle of going to see their dentist. The issue of how to whiten your teeth is asked continually, and these days can be answered in a large number of ways. There are plenty of products you can choose for use at home that will take stains from your teeth and so help you to reinvigorate their natural shine. If you're looking for the strongest teeth whiteners, then the web is a terrific place to begin looking - you can choose the products that have the best reviews from other customers who have genuine experience of using them.

The Push Up: A Classic Exercise Move That Has Withstood the Test of Time

I love classic stuff. Classic cars, classic movies, classic everything. But, my favorite would have to be classic exercise moves. This less than glamorous move is not something you would expect to see flashing on the cover of a big time exercise magazine.

If you are as old as I am you just may remember having to go to gym class at least 3 times a week. Well according to my son those days are long gone. But, one of my first memories of that gym class is the first exercise move we were taught. The old standard pushup.

The push up is by far one of the best known body weight exercises in the world. So much so it is used as an integral part of all four of the United States military services yearly physical fitness assessments. It is also one of the best all body moves you can do. Push ups work your chest, shoulder, arm, and abdominal muscles. And to some degree your leg muscles.

Remember to warm up prior to performing army exercises. I find a brisk walk or a few sets of jumping jacks do the trick. So without further ado let's get to the mechanics of doing a push up.

Prep: Lying face down on the floor with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Bring yourself up off of the floor by extending your arms (do not lock the elbows). Ensure the back and stomach are straight with no sagging. You should be on you toes with the feet spread slightly.

Execute the move: Begin by slowly lowering the body by bending the arms. Once the elbows are at a 90 degree angle you are in the down position. Hold this position for 1-2 seconds. To return to the up position, push your chest up until the arms are extended (once again do not lock the elbows).

Repeat as many times as determined by your workout routine.

Tips:
- Keep the upper and lower body straight during all movements.
- Breath in during the down execution and exhale while returning to the up position.
- Make sure your core is tight during the entire exercise (to tighten your core pull your belly button towards your spine and hold).

That my friends is how you perform a classic push up. Follow these simple tips/techniques and you will be well on your way performing perfect pushups.

Note: Please remember to consult your Physician prior to starting any physical fitness regime.

The Vitamin and Mineral Review

Understanding the role vitamins and minerals play in the human body is very important to ensure healthy life.Every day you're body reproduces skin, muscle, and bone, it carries red blood, nutrients and oxygen through out you're whole system. It sends out nerve singles from the brain to all the major pathways in the body.It formulates the chemical messengers that go from one organ to another issuing the instruction that help sustain life.

In order for the body to do all these things it requires the help of raw materials that contain at least 30 vitamins, minerals and dietary compounds. Many of the components in these compounds can not be manufactured in the body by it's self, and we get them through food and fluid consumption.

Vitamin and minerals are often called essential nutrients, they are essential because they perform the many different roles in the body that sustain life. They help strengthen bones, heal wounds, and build a healthy immune system. They also help convert food into energy and repair damaged cells.

Vitamins and minerals are also referred to as micro-nutrients because you're body need only tiny amounts of them to function, yet failing to get those small quantitiescan lead to disease.Just as a lack of key micro-nutrients can cause harm to the body, getting sufficient quantities will provide a substantial benefit.

Although both are considered micro-nutrients they differ in basic ways.Vitamins are organic and can be broken down by heat, air and acid.Minerals are inorganic and hold on to their chemical structure. So what does this mean? Well minerals that are in the soil and water easily find their way into our body through the plants, fish, animals, and fluids we consume. But it is harder to get vitamins through food consumption and other sources because of cooking, storage and simple exposure to the air. These things actually destroy the organic compounds of micro-nutrient.

Micro-nutrients interact together in good ways and bad ways. one example is vitamin D helps the body take the calcium it needs from the foods passing through the digestive tract, instead of harvesting it from your bones.Vitamin C helps you absorb iron more efficiently and so on.The interplay of micro-nutrients are not always cooperative, an example is that vitamin C blocks you're body's ability to assimilate the essential mineral cooper, and even a miner over load of of the mineral manganese can worsen iron deficiency.

So therefore it is important to have a basic understanding and some basic knowledge on how and why vitamin and minerals work in the human body.It is equally important to take a good quality vitamin or mineral supplement. There are so many supplements on the market today it can be quite confusing. You want to go with the organics and the ones that can be easily absorbed by the body. Learn about the company that produces the supplements and make sure they are of high standard,it is sometimes better to spend a little more money then to go with a supplement that is of low quality. So with closing this article i hope it will be good reading for people looking for some basic knowledge on vitamin and minerals.

Knee Replacement Rehab Exercises - From Surgery and Beyond

Total knee replacement surgery is a major surgery performed only after various other methods of conservative treatment have failed. During the surgery cuts are made in several areas, starting with a long longitudinal incision down the front of the knee at the top of the patella (kneecap), extending down to the tibial tubercle. A cut is then made deep into the capsule to reach the knee joint.

At this point, the knee is entirely exposed. Smaller cuts are made to eliminate cartilage in the bone and to correct deformities before trial hardware is fit inside the knee and test for range of motion. When the right fit is made, the permanent pieces are moved into place and sealed there with bone cement. Knee replacement rehab exercises will begin immediately.

On the day of the surgery, the leg with the new knee will be placed in a CPM, or continuous passive motion machine, that will gently start range of motion therapy for 4-6 hours. This will be repeated each day the patient remains hospitalized, usually three. Physical therapy will begin the next day and happen twice daily, with knee replacement rehab exercises including motion exercises, stretching and strengthening, and beginning to walk with the aid of a walker. The patient usually goes home on the 3rd day post-surgery, although depending on their recovery, they could go for a short 5-12 day stay at a rehab facility.

At a skilled nursing facility, if this is where the patient is moved to before home, knee replacement rehab exercises will continue twice a day, with general nursing care provided around the clock, including any dressing changes, administration of pain meds and other medicines, and any assistance the patient may still require. If the patient has gone home, they will have a home health nurse who will visit them 3 to 4 times a week to do the same things that the patient in the rehab facility would be doing, including physical therapy that may, at first, be painful, but ease with each successive week.

At about week 6 to 12 post-operative, most patients will be able to move on to knee replacement rehab exercises that include focusing more on rebuilding strength in the knee. Pain should be decreasing just about weekly at this point and the patient should be able to start coming off the more intense pain medications to using a NSAID or Tylenol. Around weeks 12 to 16, the patient should be resuming most of the normal activities with only the occasional swelling and tenderness and after six months, patients should definitely be feeling like a new person, with full healing taking about one year, give or take a few weeks depending on rehab tolerance.

Chiropractic Care for Auto Injuries and Whiplash

Chiropractic Care for Auto Injuries

How many people choose chiropractic care?

The Insurance Research Council reports that one third of the people injured in car accidents choose chiropractic treatment for their injuries. The Spine Research Institute of San Diego reports that there are 3 million new whiplash injuries every year. Other studies estimate that one in six people are involved in a motor vehicle accident every year, that's a lot of people.

Why do so many people seek chiropractic care after a wreck?

  1. Sprains and strains of the spinal muscles and ligaments are the most common injuries reported from motor vehicle accidents. Doctors of Chiropractic are highly trained in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, especially spinal injuries. Add to that the high patient satisfaction ratings from chiropractic (nearly 100%) you have a winning combination. For more information check out previous post.

Balla JI, Iansek R. Headaches arising from disorders of the cervical spine. In: Hopkins A, ed. Headache: Problems in Diagnosis and Management. London: WB Saunders; 1988.

Should I be checked after the wreck?

If you experience any symptoms, you should be checked by a trained professional:

  1. Neck pain
  2. Headaches
  3. Arm Pain
  4. Leg Pain
  5. Numbness or tingling
  6. Dizziness
  7. Memory Loss
  8. Ringing in the Ears
  9. Any other symptoms...

There are many factors that determine your risk of injury. These include: the speeds involved, where the impact occurred, and occupant risk factors.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a non-medical term that describes a group of problems that are also known as Whiplash Associated disorders (WAD). The more technical term is flexion-extension injuries. Researchers are still studying the large number of problems that can be caused in these types of collisions.

The term was first used in the 1920's and was first called railway spine. New technology and studies demonstrate that the muscles and ligaments can stretch, discs can tear and protrude. Brains can be injured and even the low back can be hurt.

What should I do after an accident?

Schedule an appointment to be checked. We will perform a consultation and examination to determine the extent of your injuries. It is not uncommon for symptoms to get worse as time goes on, or to not occur at all for weeks or months. It is important to be checked and to document any injuries immediately after the accident and to receive appropriate treatment.

Your examination will help decide:

1) The extent of your injuries

2) If special tests (i.e. MRI, CT scan, Motion X-ray, etc.) are required

3) If you should see another specialist (i.e. Pain Management doctor, Surgeon etc.)

4) the type and the number of treatments you may need

5) If you need time off work (we will provide a note to your employer if warranted)

Who pays for my care from a car accident?

Kentucky car insurance will pay 100% for car accident related injuries. Payment is available for any passengers in the car, the driver, and even if you are "at fault."

Under Kentucky Assigned Claims, you can receive care, even if the driver was not insured at the time of the collision.

It is important to note that, payment to the chiropractor depends on the documentation of the injuries. One of the main considerations when choosing a chiropractor is choosing a doctor who understands the documentation requirements as well as treatment options.

How long does treatment take?

The answer to this question depends on several factors including:

  1. The severity of the injury
  2. Timeliness of beginning treatment
  3. Type of Injury
  4. Risk Factors including occupant age, gender, pre-existing conditions and a number of other factors

What types of treatment are available?

Treatment types include gentle chiropractic care, massage therapy, exercise rehabilitation, electric stimulation. We also provide referrals for pain management, neurologist, neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon as needed. Our goal is to get you the relief you deserve.

What if I have an attorney?

Your doctor will send your records to an attorney of your choice. Kentucky Law requires doctors to provide one free copy of your medical record to you or a representative, like an attorney.

Need to Review the Definition of Health by WHO in the Light of Research in the Parapsychology Field

The current definition of health by World Health Organization includes physical, mental and social dimensions of health. But even a cursory look at the current state of the world reveals that social health is conspicuous by its absence. There is severe unrest in almost every country.

Crime rate is increasing in almost every country. There is steady increase in alcohol abuse, drug abuse, human trafficking, child abuse (physical, psychological and sexual), terrorism, rampant corruption and breakdown of families. Not a day passes without reports of murder and rape.

All the advances in science and technology have not helped people to enjoy peace of mind and happiness. The reason is the neglect of spiritual development. Today's average man is running without knowing where he is going.

Leading psychiatrists while trying to manage problems like anxiety, depression and phobias have realized that man is not just a combination of body and mind but has a soul as well which survives the death of the body. Specialists in other fields have also realized that man has a spiritual dimension as well. Many reputed scientists including a few Nobel Prize winners are convinced about the existence of soul. Hence there is a need to redefine health and include the spiritual dimension of health.

We still do not know the exact cause of many diseases. Extensive research in the field of past life regression has revealed that many health related problems have their roots in our previous lives. Reincarnation is not a myth but a fact. Searching for reincarnation research or reincarnation proof will yield a long list of results.

Mere redefinition of health by itself will not solve all the problems. But if more and more people understand the cosmic law of cause and effect and realize that their actions come back to them they will certainly try to reform themselves. When leading doctors in every country start organizing seminars, radio talks and TV shows about the scientific evidence for the existence of soul and reincarnation people will certainly take interest in the topic. People will begin to understand that the purpose of human life is to grow spiritually and realize our true nature.

WHO should encourage every member country to accept the new definition of health which includes the spiritual dimension and modify the medical education accordingly. Doctors have to play an important role in helping people to enjoy sound health. In order to do this effectively doctors should first have comprehensive understanding of health.

Physical health cannot be maintained without taking care of psychological health and psychological health cannot be protected without tackling spiritual ignorance. Needless to say psychological disturbances lead to social problems.

Modern medicine has been a predominantly disease centered and treatment oriented system. There is a need to change this approach and give primary importance to prevention of disease and maintenance of health.

It is also desirable to combine modern medicine with Ayurveda in order to promote holistic health. Ayurveda which is at least five thousand years old gave the most comprehensive definition of health incorporating physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions of health.

Ideally everyone should have some social responsibility. Doctors perhaps should have it to a greater extent as they are responsible for health. We are affected by what happens in our society. No one can be safe in his house if his neighbor's house is on fire.

Humanity has paid a heavy price for neglecting spiritual development. Another equally serious threat to world peace is religious fundamentalism. By promoting scientific spirituality we can counter both the threats and establish a new world order based on Truth, Right conduct, Peace, Love and Non-violence.

I request all the like minded people to support an online petition requesting the World Health Organization to review the definition of health and include the spiritual dimension.
